Pluriversal reflection 2

Reflect back on the last three week’s case studies. Referencing some of the ideas in this week's readings or lecture, discuss how a specific case study could be modified to better align with your own values/worldview.

“The focus of the Pluriversal Design SIG is to create a liberatory and radical space in the design research community to promote/create inter-cultural and pluralistic conversations about design.”

- Design Research Society

This week we were introduced to a new concept of framework to discover - Pluriversal and Indigenous Futurism. Pluriversal Futurism is a speculative design framework where it aspires to create a desirable future for all communities and cultures. Indigenous Futurism has a similar goal but focuses on indigenous communities and consists of a movement within the media industry. From the past three weeks of the DES231 course, I have learnt and discovered multiple frameworks of design; two of which were ‘Speculative’ and ‘Transition’ design. With the values that I was able to develop myself and learn, I thought of the most desirable future in my personal perspective which would be; no gender inequality and discrimination against others with equal, peaceful status for everyone. From this worldview, the case that I would modify is ‘Space Sweepers’.

The film itself is entertaining and enjoyable to many people but there are some aspects of the film that goes against my personal values. First, the plot itself mainly revolves around one male character then there are three supporting characters with only one female cast. The whole cast in the film does not have many female actors as well. Also, although the film itself looks into a fictional future, if the future were to see that pathway I would like to act in order to change that future to have a more desirable, ideal one. The earth is an abandoned place and the high and low ranks of people became more distinct in the setting of the film. The low-status people live out of space on their space ships or is based on non-livable earth that is basically abandoned from the high-class society living on a separate ‘planet’. This huge gap between ranks and status hugely violates my personal values as well as the equality of people. Therefore in conclusion, if I had to modify one of the cases that I had studied and analysed in the past week, I would modify Space Sweepers up to my personal value.
