Pluriversal reflection 1
As a living being what do you cherish? How do these ideas, beings, things and/or experiences help you navigate through life?

I was able to first encounter the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals during my Bachelor of Design course. To aid us to narrow down our ideas and the problem to work with, I was introduced to the seventeen different aspects of sustainability that the United Nations is trying to achieve. From this, I was able to further develop my passion and vision towards a more specific design solution. Ever since I was young, I always had difficulty deciding between things and did not have a sense of what I exactly liked. But as I have grown up and developed more knowledge of the world, I was able to choose at least a bit more of the pathway as a designer that I want to go and achieve. In this blog post, I will discuss two different UN Sustainable Development Goals that I am passionate and interested in, then apply those goals to how I currently vision and navigate through life, especially at a designer aspect.

The first goal and the one that I am most passionate about is the fourth UN SDG Gender Equality. Many females in the world do not receive the required equality due to their ‘gender’ and sexual differences. Although I have not experienced a direct female inequality, as I am a female myself I can strongly sympathise with the ones that went through hardships as a girl. Just because females are physically less strong than males, they are treated as inferior. An article by UNICEF states that approximately 13 million girls globally have experienced forced sex in their lifetimes and they are only aged 15 to 19.

The second goal that I will discuss is the third one listed in the UN SDG - Good Health and Well-being. I got recently interested and got more passionate about this aspect due to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19. Everyone got stressed and anxious in their houses in isolation trying to cope with the panic that the pandemic may cause. Initially, I dealt with the whole lockdown and quarantine situation as I was used to staying home and liked being lazy on my bed. However, as we got back into our normal lives when the pandemic seemed to get better I realised the importance of going outside as I began hanging out with people. A recent covid case broke out again which caused a massive spread of the disease around the whole region, and even I was exposed to locations of interest. I have never gotten exposed nor received the infamous covid test before. This led me to feel extreme anxiety and stress that I may have spread around the area as well as the number of upcoming assignments during the lockdown. From this personal experience, good health and well-being, especially the mental aspect are very crucial for one individual.
As a designer based in New Zealand and originally from Korea, I was able to experience both cultures at the same time and learn the skill to develop my own vision and the way to cope with life. Life is like an endless cycle as one would say, as generation by generation it constantly evolves and changes but simultaneously processes in a cycle. From the things I cherish and are passionate about, I will continue to further strengthen my vision as a designer and as a living being in this world.
