Case study 4: ‘Starbucks: Better Together’
Find an example of transition design that was not discussed in class today that you think is more successful (or interesting to you) and apply the same analytic framework to it you used in class to construct your argument.

What was the overall goal of the design and how did it achieve it?
Starbucks Korea launched a sustainable community-focused project called ‘Better Together’ in April this year to reduce 30% carbon footprint and increase 30% employment of partners. The company had announced to dispose of all single-use cups by the year 2025 in South Korea. They already launched the project in multiple locations in different regions to fully use reusable cups in store. Especially the Jeju island region where 23 stores operating on the island is planned to remove all disposable cups by October 2021 which is expected to remove approximately 5 million cups annually. The cups are available in Tall and Grande sizes which are cleaned, sanitised and dried by a third party to be circulated back to the stores. This positive change for the environment was initially started from the usage of paper straws and the strawless lids for the Starbucks cups. The company stated that they were able to reduce approximately 126 tonnes of plastic straws a year which is a 40% drop in usage. Starbucks Korea also provides incentives for users to encourage them into participating in this sustainable movement which will allow a better sustainable future.

Why did you find it a more successful example of transition design than the other cases your group analysed?
How did it better achieve its goal?
While looking for examples that showed a successful Transition Design, I decided to focus on the sustainable aspect of the certain case. As Transition Design focuses on creating a sustainable future for a better environment and better community, one case popped up in my head. Since I personally had experience with working in Starbucks Korea I knew the company itself were doing various projects for a positive impact on the environment. A recent project was the ‘Better Together’ project also known as ‘가치있는 같이’ in Korean. This project looks into the near future - the year 2025 - as well as provide opportunities for a sustainable future for both the environment and the community. From this project, it can act as a catalyst for other branches to join in the move to reduce carbon footprint and the usage of plastic hence fitting to the Transition Design framework.
