The lamp once out

Cool stars enter

The window frame.

- Natsume Soseki

When I first read the poem, I had no idea what it meant and had no imagery in mind. However, after having the tutorial session during Week 3, I was able to create a story in my head from reading the chosen poem. During the tutorial, I had created a poster design that was similar to the concept below.

I realised I did not take a photo of the design I made from the tutorial so by recreating the design and altering slightly by adding the colour and slightly changing the composition I came to a concept like this. However, I realised that this did not have enough salience and seemed to not have enough focus on one thing I decided to let go of this idea and further explore by sketching out a variety of designs on the iPad.

I did rough sketches exploring from different angles, adjusting the pose of the boy and altering the sky. I decided to go with the last design as I thought I could explore typography more. I wanted to continue using the colour blue and yellow as they are complementary colours which will allow the stars (yellow) to stand out more.

I have reached the final design pretty quickly as I was used to using digital tools. I mainly illustrated everything on the iPad and adjusted composition and colour using Photoshop. After posting (what I thought) the final design of Poster 2. I received feedback to improve the layout slightly so the boy can be seen more.

The final design of Poster 2 has been completed.

Instead of putting the main title at the very centre of the 1:1 scale, I moved it up slightly so I can place the boy higher than previously. I have used yellow colour for typography to signify light - stars in the sky. I also explored proximity, alignment and contrast to the typography to give more emphasis on the title, then the subtitle (coming soon).
