DESIGN STATEMENT

A lamp that has an aesthetically pleasing design that can be used as an interior decoration but also has the functions of a task light and also aid the client with sleeping. It must include the ability to control the brightness of the lamp in order to not disturb the other user in a room which may include control over remote or an app through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The design will incorporate inspirations that the client chose as well as aspects of what the client likes such as games and TV shows.

INTRODUCTION

For our second assignment in DESIGN 100, we were assigned to create a prototype of a lamp design intended for a chosen client.

The target user that I have chosen for this project was my younger sibling.

INTERVIEW

Since we regularly spent time together at home, I could ask questions related to this assignment whenever I needed.

The place that she normally spends time is on her bed with her iPad. She occasionally uses the couch in the lounge but she is on her bed more often. Since we don't have a private desk for her, she uses her bed as her workspace as well as her private space using the tent on her bed.

After a brief interview, I learnt that she had a problem falling asleep at the right times and also the fact that we had to share the use of lights as well. She tends to go to sleep later than me so she finds it uncomfortable to work in the dark whenever I turn off the light to go to sleep. While interviewing, she mentioned that she wished there was a feature to control the lamp with a remote or an app and must have the ability to adjust the brightness of the lamp.

RESEARCH

Then I took off looking for inspirations that will help me design the best lamp for my client. As always, I created a mood board using Pinterest to gather ideas of what design and features I could apply to my own design.

I requested the client to gather examples of designs as well to get an idea of what aesthetic she is interested in.

While gathering for inspirations, I also went down to do research on what design could be best for the client.

IDEATION

Using the inspiration and the research I sketched out various designs of lamps.

As I sketched out drawings I developed certain designs on the way, asked feedback from the client and continued on to create a design that satisfied both the client and myself.

From previous ideations, I created a design that seemed to include all the features and functions that the client wanted (left). However, the final design didn't satisfy both of us hence I took off in a direction and resulted in a final design that we both liked (right).

I then went further in developing the final design by adjusting the shapes of the shades.

Although it was difficult to choose one design out of the variations the client managed to choose one for me to develop into an actual prototype.

DISCUSSION

The lamp created has an aesthetically pleasing design that soothes the eyes with the use of wooden texture and light desaturated colours. The designed shade enables the light shining to have an artistic look which the client wanted. It is entirely wireless, so when it is hung from the tent, the minimalistic and pleasing design is maintained. It is sustainable as it is rechargeable; therefore, no waste on batteries. Overall feedback from the client was very positive. She was amazed at the amount of work I have put into designing her lamp, especially when she saw the rendered model. She was indeed disappointed that I could not include the features of controlling with an app but other than that she was pretty satisfied. She has been slightly indecisive when I asked for her feedback, so it was difficult for me to come up with the right designs that will satisfy her need. However, in conclusion, I was able to create a final design that pleased both the client and myself. In the future, if I were to make improvements, I would like to work on adding the functionality that the client wanted as well as have an opportunity to create the actual lamp itself to test out if it works.
